Krupa na Vrbasu lies about 25 kilometres south of Banja Luka, between gorges in the Vrbas valley. It is known for the cascades and watermills on the Krupa River, the Monastery of St Elijah and the ruins of the medieval town of Greben.
Its natural and cultural landmarks are concentrated within a relatively small area, making it possible to plan a full-day trip around the waterfalls, monastery, springs of the Krupa and viewpoints above the valley.
Cascades and watermills on the Krupa River
The short Krupa River runs through the settlement in a sequence of cascades and waterfalls. Traditional watermills survive beside the water, giving this part of the village its distinctive character and making it suitable for an easy walk and photography.
Water levels and the appearance of the cascades change throughout the year. Stone and wooden paths can be slippery after rain, so wear stable footwear and take care near the riverbank.
The monastery, Greben and walking trails
Krupa na Vrbasu Monastery, whose church is dedicated to St Elijah, is historically connected with the medieval fortress of Greben on a nearby hill. Archaeological finds at the monastery point to several building phases and an earlier place of worship.
Greben appears in written sources from the end of the 12th century. Its ruins and position above the valley reflect the former importance of this route for controlling and defending passage along the Vrbas.
