Mount Manjača

Mountain air close to the city

Manjača is a mountain area south of Banja Luka, extending between the Vrbas River to the east and the Sana River to the west. Broad forests, meadows, pastures and mountain streams create a landscape suited to day trips and outdoor activities.

Its highest point is Velika Manjača at 1,236 metres above sea level. Because the area is extensive and weather conditions can change, choose a route and equipment suited to the season and the length of the trip.

Hiking and cycling on Manjača

Marked walking and cycling trails pass through woodland, open pastures and villages across Manjača. Different routes range from shorter family outings to longer hiking and mountain-bike tours.

There is little shade on open parts of the mountain, while forest and gravel roads can become muddy after rain. Carry enough water, sun protection, a map or reliable navigation and an extra layer of clothing.

  • Check the length and difficulty of the chosen route.
  • Do not rely on mobile reception alone.
  • Respect private property, livestock and access rules in villages.

Petar Kočić and Stričići

Manjača is closely associated with the writer and public figure Petar Kočić, who was born in the village of Stričići. His home region and the lives of people from Zmijanje left a deep mark on his literary work.

Kočićev zbor, a cultural gathering in his honour, is held each August and brings together writers, artists and visitors. Check the date and programme with the organisers before travelling.
