Rafting on the Vrbas

A whitewater adventure on the wild river

Rafting on the Vrbas combines fast canyon sections, clear water and steep rock scenery close to Banja Luka. The river offers different levels of difficulty, allowing organisers to choose a route suited to water levels and the group’s experience.

The Vrbas hosted the 2009 World Rafting Championship, as well as other national and international competitions. This sporting tradition and the river’s proximity to the city have supported the development of rafting centres and trained skippers.

Routes and river conditions

Water-sports routes use the river between the Bočac dam and Banja Luka, covering up to approximately 31 kilometres. Tijesno canyon is about five kilometres long, while the start and finish depend on the desired trip length, difficulty and current conditions.

Some sections contain class III and IV rapids, while calmer stretches allow easier trips. Water levels can change quickly, so route selection should be left to a registered operator and skipper familiar with the river.

Rafting is possible during different parts of the year, but conditions vary by season. Confirm the departure time, duration and equipment directly with the operator shortly before the trip.

Rafting safety and preparation

The operator should provide a helmet, buoyancy aid, paddle and clothing or footwear suited to the water temperature. Before launching, the skipper gives a safety briefing and explains how the group should respond to commands.

  • Book with a registered operator using trained guides.
  • Tell the operator about health limitations and your experience in water.
  • Bring dry clothes and avoid carrying unsecured items that could be lost.
  • Respect the skipper’s decision if conditions require a route change or cancellation.
