Tijesno is an approximately five-kilometre section of the Vrbas canyon south of Banja Luka. Steep limestone cliffs, a narrow river valley and emerald water create one of the most striking natural landscapes near the city.
The regional road follows the river through the canyon, with views changing quickly between cliffs, rapids and wooded slopes. Stop only at designated, clearly visible places away from traffic.
Nature and activities in Tijesno canyon
The canyon is used for rafting, kayaking, sport climbing and nature observation. Conditions for water activities depend on river levels and hydropower operations, while climbing requires suitable equipment and experience.
The safest way to experience the canyon from the river is an organised rafting trip on the Vrbas with a qualified guide. Independent visitors should check access, terrain conditions and the weather forecast in advance.
Planning a visit
Tijesno is not a conventional city picnic area with a continuous pedestrian promenade. The road carries regular traffic, some parts of the riverbank are difficult to reach and rocks can be unstable after rain.
- Do not stop a vehicle on blind bends.
- Use a helmet, buoyancy aid and a trained guide for water activities.
- Take litter away and do not approach cliff edges without protection.
